January 27: A break from Modern Haiku today, to discuss a piece Carlos Luis sent me for the Cuban e.zine John Bennett, Scott Helmes and I are conduits of some sort for (by which I mean we're who people wanting to submit work send it to):

I thought of Scott's visual haiku series as soon as I saw Carlos's pieces (and his other two were closely related to the one shown, but I didn't want to compete with the e.zine they'll be in be exhibiting all three). I have no idea what affect, if anny, Scott's works had on Carlos, but I see similarities. In any case, Carlos's works are in a new direction for him, and--if related to Scott's, take off richly newwhere from his. I was so charmed by them, I had to desecrate one:

I hope neither Scott nor Carlos is bothered by this. If nothing else, it helps give an idea of how same and different the work of each in this subgenre is. More and more, I see this kind of thing as the sort of departure from visual poetry that visual poetry was from solitextual (solely textual) poetry. There's a language being expressed here that is neither verbal nor visual.
Most important, though, a tradition is forming that allows more and more of the cross-referencing non-representational art--music most obviously--depends on for its aesthetic effect.
