May 3: I feel uneasy about my opinion that "ninety percent of our country's known poets are superfluteurs." It isn't fair to say they contribute nothing whatever to World Culture. Even the least talented of them generally carry on a worthwhile tradition--and may even get someone who will prove a culturateur of the highest calibar a start. Indeed, most poets start imitating the mediocrities of their day, or at least some of them. So, I could not inappropriately call the ninety percent of known poets whose contribution ot World Culture is close to nothing simple culturateurs of the lowest grade. My problem with that is that I want the term, "culturateur," to be virilely elitest. I want someone's having the necessary qualifications to be called it to be someone very special.
I think what I need is a fourth term, for a cultural worker in between a culturateur and a superfluteur in merit. "Mediocriteur" would be accurate but more negative-sounding than I'd like it to be. Perhaps something like "complementeur," for one who fills out the culture. Pause. For now, I'll go with "subsidiateur"--suhb SIH dee uh TURR.
I don't mind that, to tell the truth. Moreover, I think it could take over for "superfluteur." So I hereby dismiss that, and divide subsidiateurs into alpha and beta subsidiateurs, the published subsidiateurs or the equivalent being in the alpha class, the unpublished subsidiateurs or the equivalent--mainly the weekend culture workers or dilettantes--being in the beta class.
As for me, only lightly published but not an establishment man, I remain either a culturateur or aberrateur. I was going to determine which in this installment of my blog, but can't do it too well. As a poet (and critic), I've gotten my knocks, but few consider my poetry or writings on poetry nutto, so I can't see myself as an aberrateur in literature. I may well be one in psychology, but I don't see that my theory of psychology breaks any laws of Nature, or goes against known data . . . yet. Which makes me innocent until proven aberrateurical.
