Daily Notes on Poetry & Related Matters

May 11: I've still composed less than a hundred mathemaku, as far as I know. If the count is above a hundred, it isn't much above it. It ought to be easy to knowck off two or three of them a day. You just have to think of a potent image--"China," say, for a dividend, and find a similarly potent image that most people would never associate with your first image for your divisor. "Butterflies?" I thought of others, but will stick with this one for now.

Next, let your divisor and dividend rattle around in your head for a while--below the level of consciousness for part of the time. At length, if you're at all experienced in the kind of surrealistic metaphor-making involved in the process, you should be able to come up with a quotient--or potent image you can multiply your divisor by to yield a product close in value to your dividend. According to your intuition. Just now, after leaving my "butterflies" and "China," for a couple of hours, I came up with "arguments of paleologists about the causes of the dinosaurs' extinction."

Yes, that's my quotient, who knows why. "China," by the way, has changed to "Cathay." I want to enlarge "butterflies," but am not sure how. "Butterflies in every other line of a poem?" The idea is to get a proto-mathemaku, then analyze it. If your answer is insane, figure out why it is, then modify it. As you work, your unconscious will almost surely provide you with the product your quotient and divisor result in--especially, again, if you've had experience doing mathemakuical multiplication. It needn't be a verbally-expressed image, by the way. Nor need any of the other terms in the example.

"Butterflies escaping a book of poetry." No, ". . . ascending from a page of poetry."

For some reason, I want river-sounds in my subdividend product. I thought of snow for the remainder, but dropped it because it's in the extinction of the dinosaurs. I don't know what my draft means yet, so can't analyze it. Maybe tomorrow I'll be able to.
