May 28: My September/October column for Small Press Review is going to be about Nice Vassilakis's Text Loses Time. As is my custom, I have dawdled on it, only getting one sentence of it done--a sentence about me rather than Nico's book--in accordance with another custom of mine. Anyway, among the many terrific things in the book is a sequence of ten , , , uh, things, like the following:

These are the first two frames of Formulas. They may well be absolutely perfect examples of works exactly in the center of the border between what I call "visual poetry" and what I call "textual illumagery." Hence, I believe that if I can get my synapses working for the first time in what seems like months, I may be able to use these and (perhaps) the other frames of Nico's sequence definitively to elucidate those two classifications. My main challenge will be to show why they are, in my opinion, extraordinarily effective as illumages (aesthetically-intended visual images, according to my aesthetics) because of their textual elements.
My droopy synapses won't let me say more on this topic today. Maybe tomorrow.
