June 17: A few days ago, another terrific visio-textual book in full color arrived at my house, C. Mehrl Bennett's Words&Junk. The only thing wrong with it was its hypocritiquability. That is to say, its pieces have too much going for them for my critiquing mechanisms easily to handle. I have to sit down with them a while before words will come--if they come. I can say, however, that their colors are powerful, of a beauty sometimes disturbing, sometimes lovely, occasionally both, and always out of an enviably original color sense. Always, too, in tune--or intentionally counter to--the texts woven into the pieces. Here is a sample that I call "Elaborate," although it is untitled in the collection, as are all the pieces accompanying it:
