Daily Notes on Poetry & Related Matters

May 4: An observation, just to have something to say here today: if 90% of those reading a poem do not agree 90% on how to scan it, metrically, it does not scan. I don't accept syllabic or accentual verse as scanning, but similar reasoning applies there. It's just like an interpretation of what I call a poem's fore-burden, or its main surface meaning: it's quite possible no two people will agree on what it means exactly but if 90% of those engaging the poem do not agree on a basic meaning, the poem is incoherent (assuming conventional expressive modality and language, and sufficient time for scholars to have figured out and made public its thornier passages).
