July 11: A new Grummanism today: "solipsophy" (sah LIHP sah fee), any knowledge that one holds without regard for its objective truth because one wants to; faith, in other words. "Verosophy," or objective truth (or truth validated by a consensus of knowledgeable others with no reliance on faith of any kind--except in ultimate premises--is its opposite. Solipsophical (sah' lihp SAH fih kul) reality is faith-based reality, subjective reality, reality which has no meaning for the rational regardless of how many agree with some form of it. Verosophical (vehr' ih SAH fih kul) reality is the only reality I accept--with one exception: pre-verosophical reality, or a potential reality based on a versophical theory not yet empirically validated. My theory of psychology, for instance.
Do I therefore think solipsophy should be banned? Definitely not. To each his own, and it may be necessary. It is also interesting.
What does this have to do with poetry, the supposed subject of my blog. Maybe not a whole lot. But I do believe that their are solipsophical and verosophical interpretations of poetry. The latter are based on the text, the former on subjective philogushy, philogushy being a subcategory of solipsophy.
